RARE Pair of 1950's Antique Original Nyūyoku Dolls   Hakata Urasaki  Japan
** Waterproofing should be considered no longer effective and buyers should not use water on HAKATA DOLLS!!! **
At the time of the Korean Conflict (June 1950 - July 1953) most U.S. military passed through a base at Fukuoka because of its proximity to Korea. Soldiers wanted Japanese souvenirs so since nearby was where Hakata dolls were made, the post exchange (PX) made a large wholesale order of the dolls from Urasaki and other manufacturers.
At the request of the Americans who transacted the sale, the dolls were finished with a surface coat which helped waterproof the paint, but also dulled the finish. This was done because the Americans preferred that it was easier to clean, but this feature was discontinued after the war since most Japanese preferred the non-waterproofed versions which allow for brighter colors. These dolls were, and still are, typically displayed in glass cases to prevent dust from entering.
Nyūyoku
is a Japanese term for bathing.
Condition:  Old man doll is in great condition; Old woman doll has a small piece which has been repaired and I have priced very fairly to account for this, but please refer to the photos and zoom in to obtain precise details.
