Now you can be part of our Navy history and it's tradition:
These custom made mini Navy neckerchiefs were made by future sailors, for a
sailors family!!!
Nothing says "Navy" more than a sailor's neckerchief. It is what immediately
stands out when you notice sailors.
The sailor's neckerchief is the most widely inspected item during command personnel
inspections. Why? Because the neckerchief is the only uniform item that the sailor
prepares themselves. It is solely their responsibility to insure their neckerchief is
tied correctly, at the proper length, and with the correct "tightness" of the knot. All
other uniform items are done by others, except the neckerchief.
The cleanliness of the uniform is performed by the dry cleaner.
The haircut is performed by the barber.
The placement of the uniform rating (rank) badge is done by the tailor.
The shoes are store-bought, high gloss, duty "Oxford" shoes.
The ribbons/medal are purchased and easily placed on the ribbon bar.
At personnel inspections to receive a 4.0 score, you must have a correctly
tied neckerchief!
The Neckerchief History:
The neckerchief worn around the neck and tied at the front has been a
familiar item attire almost since the Navy's beginning. Today, sailors in
paygrade E6 and below wear the neckerchief with their Navy dress blues
or white uniforms.
The U.S. Navy introduced the black neckerchief in 1817. The neckerchief
was made black
because the color didn't readily show dirt.
The neckerchief is made with one diagonal fold, and then rolled. Sailors
would put it around their neck when wearing their dress blues or whites,
then tied in a square knot, with the knot properly worn just below the "V"
of the sailor's dress jumper uniform.
The shape of the knot had no special significance. Of course, the purpose
was to assure uniformity in the ranks. A sailor who was sloppy in donning
their neckerchief was likely to receive undo attention from superiors.
The neckerchief was not issued from 1973 to 1978, when sailors wore a
different uniform. That experiment did not survive, and now sailors are
back to wearing the traditional neckerchiefs.
Nothing speaks U.S. Navy more than a neckerchief!
